Global Wind Day photo competition – Wind in mind

Wind in Mind – International wind energy photo competition

Have you ever thought of wind turbines as “an elegant herd of white-limbed alien creatures bounding over the terrain”, as British author Will Self does? Here is the chance to let your imagination run wild, show your skills with a camera and even make a name for yourself as a photographer. Find a way of conveying wind energy technology in a new way. Look at wind turbines in a fresh light. Capture seasonal colours, people, animals and landscapes as they interact with wind energy.

Enter this international competition on the theme of Wind Energy by submitting your photographs of wind energy to the Global Wind Day website. The winner will receive a €1,000 Amazon voucher and the winning photo will become part of online professional photography archive www.hardrainproject.com; five runners up will get a voucher worth €250.

All photo’s will be displayed outdoors in the EU area of Brussels during Global Wind Day on 15 June 2012. The winning photo will also be published in renewable energy newspaper ‘Recharge’ and the European wind energy industry magazine Wind Directions.

  • Winning photos to be announced by Global Wind Day, 15 June 2012

A wind energy photo competition, open to all, was launched today. In the run-up to Global Wind Day on 15 June – the annual day promoting the power of the wind energy around the world – photographers are invited to let their imaginations take the lead and show wind energy technology in a new way, in line with the competition title, “Wind in Mind”.

The six winners, who will receive a €1,000 Amazon voucher or one of five €250 vouchers, will be chosen by an expert jury and announced shortly after Global Wind Day. All the winning pictures will be displayed in public in the EU area of Brussels.

The overall winning photo will also become part of an online professional photography collection, www.hardrainproject.com, and be published in renewable energy newspaper ‘Recharge’ and in the European wind energy industry magazine Wind Directions.

“I can’t think of a better subject for a contemporary photo competition than wind energy,” said Julian Scola, Communication Director of the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA), organisers of the Global Wind Day alongside the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). “Wind turbines are an icon: symbols of the fight against climate change, of sustainability, of our modern age. While some people noisily oppose wind turbines there are many others who love them and find them a graceful addition to our landscape”.

Lauha Fried, Communications Director at GWEC, highlighted the global nature of the competition:  “Wind power is an essential source of clean energy in over 80 countries today – we’d like to see photos taken from all around the world and encourage everyone to participate by sending us your best shots. A new feature for this year’s edition is the continental subcategory where a winner will be chosen for each continent”.

The competition is open until 6 May.

Global Wind Day 2012 – new website and photo competition

Welcome to the new Global Wind Day website. It has been redesigned especially for Global Wind Day 2012. A major development in this, the fourth annual Global Wind Day, is an international photo competition on the theme of wind energy entitled Wind in Mind. Open till 6 May, the competition will give great prizes for the best, as well as publicity for the photographers.

We aim to make this the most successful Global Wind Day ever. Last year saw over 230 events around the world, in 40 different countries. From Australia to Japan, the Czech Republic to Ireland, Argentina to Canada, adults and children went to wind farm visits, conferences, photo exhibits, educational activities, art exhibits, kitesurfing and frisbee contests on 15 June 2011. WindMade, a new consumer label was launched in New York, while trips into the North Sea to visit offshore wind farms left from the Netherlands.
